| GLEN GOODALL A SHORT BIOGRAPHY |
I guess the back-yard rink is where I got started. Starting with a patch of ice about 15 feet square, during minor hockey years it expanded to a final size 30 feet by 45 feet. And not just ice, we had lights, two- foot boards, we even had lines painted on the ice. Thanks to dad and a lot of summer work rearranging the yard we were the envy of the neighborhood.CAREER STATS FROM JUNIOR TO PRESENT
No doubt a lot of my success can be attributed to this auspicious start. It was not a matter of drills as much as it was fun, with up to twenty hockey enthusiasts chasing after the puck. You either learned to keep your head up, or you would get nowhere. The excitement heightened when I was told that I was put on the 'protected' list of Seattle in the Western Hockey League. I had been noticed! What a boost to motivation, if any was needed. Going to camp at age 14, for what was supposed to be a 'look-see', they decided to keep me, and take me to Seattle. Wow! From the small town of Thompson, way, way, North in Manitoba, to a major U.S. city. What a culture shock. Nursed along gradually, I started to earn my keep around the 86-87 season finishing 12th in league scoring. For what it is worth some of the milestones during my six years in Seattle follow:
Career Most Games Played in WHL 573
Career Most Goals Scored 262
Career 2nd Most Assists 399
Career 2nd most points
Most goals by a 16 year old 63
Most points by a 16 year old 112
84-85 Season Points 26- Goals 5 Assists 21
85-86 Season Points 41- Goals 13 Assists 28
86-87 Season Points 112- Goals 63 Assists 49 12th in League Standing
87-88 Season Points 117- Goals 53 Assists 64* 14th in League Standing
88-89 Season Points 114- Goals 52 Assists 62 13th in League Standing
89-90 Season Points 163- Goals 76 Assists 87 2nd in League Standing
* Drafted ninth by Detroit Red Wings.During this time, I was proud to play with Team Canada on two occasions. Once against the Russians under 16 team and once against the U.S under 18 in Colorado Springs. One highlight that will always stand out is the thrill of the four Pro camps with the Detroit Red Wings and the New York Rangers. The absolute pleasure of sitting in a dressing room beside the classiest act in the NHL in the person of Steve Yzerman - he has it all.
Following Junior hockey, it was off to the pros with Adirondack in the American Hockey League for a year under Barry Melrose, who also happened to be a coach for one of my years in Seattle. Possibly the best coach in my career, it was from him that I learned the two-way requirement of professional play. During this time, nothing too exciting happened although 48 points in 64 games in Adirondack was not too bad. However, a summer signing with the New York Rangers had me off to Binghampton, followed quickly by a trip to San Diego for the remainder of the season.
Then came decision time. No excuses, but the prospects of playing in the NHL did not look great, and the lure of playing in Europe presented a rosier picture. I had my chances, but at 5' 9", the larger ice surfaces in Europe would provide a better alternative. However it was necessary to build up credentials so a year was spent at Erie in the East Coast Hockey League where I finished in the top five in League Scoring. The following year it was off to Germany to play at Grafing, a Second Division team. For three years, never out of the top five in league scoring, the lucrative offer from Deggendorf of the First Division brought renewed enthusiasm. I spent three years in Deggendorf.
I now play in Ingolstadt where we have been to the finals the last two seasons and won the championship this season. I continue to play in Germany to this day.It has been quite a journey. NHL,AHL, IHL, ECHL, Second Division, and now First Division in Germany. Hockey has taken me to just about every corner of the United States, most of Western Canada and now the excitement of playing in Europe. From many coaches, and playing along side many excellent players, there has been an accumulation of hockey knowledge that I will always treasure. In partnership with my Dad, we are presently formulating this knowledge into a Database from which is emerging a series of books on the inside tips of hockey.
Hockey has been good to me and it is not over yet.
